Q: Please tell us a bit about your practice.

A: Murray Medical Centre (MMC) has been providing quality family healthcare for over 60 years to Mandurah and the surrounding community. We have been an accredited WAGPET training practice since 2001. We are one of the largest medical practices in the Peel region with over 20 GPs practising on a daily basis. We have a psychologist and many visiting specialists, including a dietitian, vascular surgeon, podiatrist, urologist and respiratory specialist. Many of our doctors have special interests in the areas of family medicine, geriatric care, mental health, chronic pain and disease, addiction, paediatric care, women’s health, palliative care, infant care and breastfeeding.

Q: What does a day at MMC Mandurah look like?

A: Upon arrival, patients are greeted by a warm and friendly reception team and have a large, comfortable and clean waiting area to wait in until their doctor is available to see them. All doctors come to the waiting room area and personally greet and call their patients through. Some patients are also booked in our large treatment room where they receive exceptional care from our nursing team. We have a large staff room and conference room where everyone enjoys each other’s company. All clinical staff attend quality circle meetings held weekly. This is an open discussion about clinical governance, difficult cases, data quality and overall quality improvement. We also have weekly visiting specialist presenting case studies and keeping doctors up-to-date on current available treatments.

Q: Why did MMC Mandurah decide to become an accredited training facility with WAGPET?

A: The partners are passionate about quality patient care and pride themselves in mentoring future GPs to have a similar ethos. They strongly believe providing registrars with a sound training experience helps create outstanding GPs for the future. Training with great doctors makes great doctors!

Q: Tell us about your best day as a training facility.

A: The best day is when our registrars pass all their exams and become fellowed. Another highlight was recently one of our previous registrars and current contractor, Dr Alison Sorenson, received the 2018 AMA Camille Michener Legacy Award which is awarded to WA’s top junior doctor. We are very proud of the exceptional doctors who have had a placement at MMC and are honoured when they wish to return as contractors.
