Taking Leave from GP Training

If you need to take leave from GP training you should discuss this with the WAGPET Operations Manager and your Training Advisor. Please be aware that all leave must be approved in advance by your Program Training Advisor. Depending on which stage of training you are at, your leave entitlements will differ.

During a hospital placement, you will be employed under the award arrangements of that hospital. During your first year of General Practice placements, you will be entitled to four weeks of annual leave per year, typically taken as two weeks each six months, especially where you have a change of employer over the year.

In addition to paid leave, the GP Training Program allows you to take up to two years general leave from the program. This is exclusive of parental leave (12 months for the primary care of a newborn infant) and elective leave (two years general leave for additional training). All leave must be applied for and approved in advance by your Program Training Advisor.

Community Resident Testimonial: Dr Carlo Bellini Dr Carlo Bellini

Prior to committing to the program, the thought of departing from the more secure and familiar hospital setting stirred feelings of apprehension, anticipation and excitement. Now having worked in General Practice, I find much of the hospital medicine I have experienced has been consolidated in the community medicine environment.
