Extended Skills Training

In addition to the 18 months of general practice training, all GP Registrar undertake six months of Extended Skills training which provides an opportunity to work in a specialised area of particular interest for the Registrar and to develop special expertise in a specific area.

While in most cases this six months is undertaken after the Registrar has completed at least some General Practice experience that can be varied to suit the Registrar's training needs and Learning Plan.

Alternatively GP Registrars can opt to undertake complete their extended skills time through a further six months in General Practice or can discuss an alternative training post with their Training Advisor and submit a learning plan to the College Censor to gain prospective approval for that post.

How to apply

GP Registrars should discuss the training opportunities available for their Extended Skills placement with their Training Advisor or Operations Manager and plan when they intend to undertake this training term.  Placements for Extended Skills terms are limited and Registrars should contact WAGPET to discuss training praferences early to avoid disappointment.

GP Registrars may also chose to undertake additional hospital time in a specialty area or choose to use previous hospital experience to meet their Extended Skills requirement by applying for Recognition of Prior Learning.  Specialty areas which can be counted as Extended Skills training time include:

  • Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • Paediatrics
  • Palliative Care
  • Public Health
