Preparing for Rural General Practice

The Enhanced Rural Training Framework ensures GP Registrars with an interest in rural and remote General Practice can access specific training as an integral part of their vocational training within a structure that leads to a recognised qualification such as the RACGP’s Fellowship in Advanced Rural General Practice or Fellowship of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine.

The Enhanced Rural Training Framework

  • Prepares you both culturally and clinically for placements in a rural and remote setting
  • Allows you to train in the areas which are relevant to the provision of rural general practice or rural and remote medicine
  • Provides a supportive framework as a guide to working towards a rural post graduate award (FARGP and/or FACRRM)

What is available through the ERTF?

  • Registrars enrolled in the FARGP and/or FACRRM will be supported by the WAGPET Rural Advisor - providing ongoing information and advice
  • Flexibility to choose hospital terms in a regional centre and get ‘hands on’ experience with a broad range of conditions
  • You will develop a rural preparation learning plan with the WAGPET Rural Advisor and your GP Supervisor
Curriculum defined procedural and/or emergency skills
  • Involvement with other rural GPs through regional activities and conferences
  • Develop rural networks and supports
  • Advanced skills courses such as EMST, PHTLS, APLS etc

My other colleagues who were involved in a WAGPET term were about to start the Community Residency Program which includes some hospital contact as well. I, on the other hand, was about to start a solely GP-based program.
