Education

GP Registrars receive education in many different ways from many different people and sources throughout their training.  There are good reasons for this as well as sound principles underpinning everything we do in education.

The education program is designed to provide the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to achieve the FRACGP and/or FACRRM and to have fulfilling careers in general practice in any setting.  WAGPET will also support GP Registrars who wish to also attain the Fellowship in Advanced Rural General Practice offered by the National Rural Faculty of the RACGP.

The WAGPET education program is based on a number of key principles:

  • Excellence and innovation
  • Experiential learning. Learning in the ‘real world’ occurs within the practice with structured supervision and teaching. The education programs also encourage active experiential learning with case discussion, role play, simulated patients, practical skills practice etc.
  • Regionalisation. In the WAGPET program regionalised training offers the opportunity to experience the diversity of general practice WA has to offer and to access the expertise of regional educators.
  • Vertical and horizontal integration. Integrating learning with undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing professional development encourages learning as a continuum. In addition there is a focus on learning to work as part of a team to ensure optimum patient care.
  • Adult learning principles. The education approach recognises different learning styles and learning needs and encourages self directed learning.
  • Reflective practice. There is a strong emphasis on learning through reflection wit regular opportunities for self, patient, peer and educator feedback.
  • Lifelong learning. Throughout the program the aim is to encourage GP Registrars to commit to continuous improvement of their knowledge and skills throughout their careers.
