GP Re-entry

If you have been considering re-entering the workplace as a General Practitioner but feel your skills are a little rusty or you lack the confidence to take that leap back in to a busy practice, you could benefit from completing the GP Re-entry Program.

Developed by GPET, the Australian Commonwealth Government, RACGP and ACRRM, and implemented by WAGPET in Western Australia, the GP Re-entry program is designed to assist General Practitioners who are no longer practising medicine and are seeking to return to the workforce. Participants will receive refresher training, mentoring and support to help them gain both the confidence and competence to return to clinical general practice.

Who is eligible for this program?

Qualified General Practitioners who:

  • Have previously worked as a general practitioner    OR;
  • Fellows of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners or Fellows of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine    AND;
  • are or can be registered through their State Medical Board; and
  • are currently not working or are working less than three sessions per week in General Practice or a similar area (e.g. breast screening).

How does it work?

Firstly, participants meet with a WAGPET Medical Education Consultant who will develop an individualised educational and training program.  This program may involve a mixture of activities, such as attending education workshops or utilising external clinical teachers for direct clinical feedback.  The objective of the plan will be to update and improve your skills, knowledge and confidence to re-engage you in General Practice.

How much does it cost?

Funding is provided by the Department of Health and Ageing under the Strengthening Medicare Initiative. Individuals will be reimbursed for travel and other costs if they are a required element of their agreed learning plan.

TRAINEE PROFILE
Community Resident Testimonial: Dr Nicholas Gray Dr Nicholas Gray

I was involved in the Community Residency Project in its pilot year, 2007, working part time in the Paediatrics Department and the remainder of the time in General Practice in the Bunbury region. I chose this term as I was particularly interested in General Practice (I am now a GP Registrar in the Northern Territory) but also wanted to keep my skills in hospital based medicine, in case I found GP was not to my liking.
