Subsidies and Incentives
As a GP registrar on the Austalian General Practice Training program you may access a number of WAGPET subsidies and Government incentives to support you whilst undertaking training.
To make life a little easier, there are a number of subsidies and incentives available during your training, to assist with things like relocation, workshop travel and rent. Eligibility for these subsidies is dependent upon your individual circumstances and you can find out more from the Training Team.
Most subsidies are reimbursed upon receipt of your expense. To receive a reimbursement you will need to complete a WAGPET Reimbursement of Expenses Claim Form and submit it with the original receipt(s) it to the training team within 60 days of an expense being incurred.
- Workshop Travel Subsidy
If you are doing a rural GP term, you may claim for travel to and from WAGPET Central Education sessions and Regional Education sessions.
To claim your Workshop Travel Subsidy you must:
- Submit a Travel Request Form to the Education Team if flights and accommodation are required to attend a compulsory workshop.
- If you are based more than 50kms from Perth, mileage may be claimed at current ATO rates. Taxi fares may also be claimed in a place of mileage.
If you are unsure if your circumstances entitle you to a reimbursement, please discuss with your Training Advisor.
- Rural Rental Subsidy
If you need a place to stay during a rural placement, the Rural Rental Subsidy can assist with contributing towards your rent. The amount provided is again determined by where you relocate to. Most registrars find they need to contribute around $100 a week for rent, but this may be higher or lower depending on your location.
Your training post may find accommodation for you, or you may need to find your own. This is something to check with your training post well in advance.
To make a claim, send your original receipts for your rental to the Training Team for processing, along with the Reimbursement of Expenses Claim Form. If your practice is the leaseholder, they will have to claim for the rental reimbursement. You will then pay your contribution directly to the practice.
- Relocation Subsidy
If you need to relocate to a different region to undertake your placement, WAGPET will assist with some of the costs of the move. The amount the subsidy covers will be determined by where you move to, and how long you will be moving for. Interstate relocations costs are not covered. For further information refer to the Rural Subsidies Policy for AGPT Program.
If air travel is required, send your Travel Request Form to the Training Team so flights can be arranged.
- Government Incentives
General Practice Rural Incentives Program (GPRIP)
From 1 July 2015, the General Practice Rural Incentives Programme (GPRIP) moved to the new classification system, the Modified Monash Model (MMM), and introduce new eligibility criteria to more effectively target financial incentives to doctors working in areas that experience greater difficulty attracting and retaining general practitioners.
