Boyup Brook is a small town, but a large shire surrounded by other towns: Collie, Bridgetown Manjimup and Kojonup. It belongs to the south-west. The community is basically evolving around farming although there is some tourism especially with certain festivals such as a rodeo festival (october) and the annual country music festival (February).
Boyup Brook Medical Services is accredited by AGPAL and WAGPET for many years now and the GPs have got a large interest in teaching.
In 2014 there is a vacancy for a basic, subsequent or advanced registrar. There are 1600 people in Boyup Brook and there is a hospital with 12 beds (6 nursing home beds) and an accident and emergency facility. In order to be on call for the hospital one needs to be having visiting rights and emergency skills credentialled by the health department.
The practice has got a practice nurse for chronic care planning, a physiotherapist next door and a visiting psychologist with whom we closely collaborate.
There is also the option of training in ultrasound skills as the practice does also have a fully equipped ultrasound for general use (not just for obstetrics). There is also the option of running a skin cancer clinic in the local hospital or surgery.
For many years it was a town with a solo GP but due to ageing community it is getting busier.
The practice culture features quite a close relationship with their GPs and the practice is quite specialised in providing the holisitic medicine.
Demography of Patients
Boyup Brook Medical services is a non-procedural practice, about 2000 different patients seen over the past 12 months, solo practice. The solo practitioner is specialised in general practice, mental health, geriatrics and general medicine.
The patients are very friendly and the compliance to the practice is very high. Basically there are not many patients that shop around as they are quite used to the one stop shop in the town.
We practice general medicine in a fairly broad sense and try to reduce referrals to a minimum. Therefore the patient load with multi morbidities is high. This is also due to the large elderly patient base as well. There is also an elderly citizens lodge in town. The hospital is fairly busy with a high turnover of patients.
