Practice Philosophy

From it's conception, it was our mission to have Broome Doctors Practice accreditated as a registrar training practice. Broome has a growing population and requires more GP's to maintain a good quality of health care. Broome is a fantastic place to live in and bring up a family. We believe that the key to retaining doctors in Broome is a well-run general practice, which provides a friendly approachable environment to learn in and provides support for all staff. At Broome Doctors Practice there is a collegial atmosphere - doctors are encouraged to discuss cases and ask the advice from their peers, both informally and also during our regular clinical review meetings. We like to foster a team approach and try to schedule regular social events to include all staff and their families. We hope that our doctors enjoy the experience working at Broome Doctors Practice so that they intend on staying at our practice for the long-term.

Broome Doctors Practice aims to provide comprehensive medical care for patients. We have an excellent working relationship with the Broome Hospital, which assists in the provision of after-hours care for our patients. We encourage the communication of information between the practice doctors and the hospital doctors via MMEX (Secure electronic messaging), which facilitates good continuity of care.

We believe that word-of-mouth is the strongest factor that maintains a practices' reputation. We aim to provide access to care for all members of the community - pensioners and concession card holders may be bulk-billed, doctors do home visits and we utilize interpreter services for patients from non-English speaking backgrounds. We want our patients to feel that Broome Doctors Practice is a family-friendly medical practice with caring and compassionate staff and we want our patients to know that they are getting medical advice and follow up.

Demographic

We currently have over 4000 active patients at Broome Doctors Practice. The case load is predominantly Caucasian, with ~ 8% Aboriginal or A.T.S.I. Patients. Patient fall over a wide range of ages - the predominant groups are families with children, teenagers and young adults, middle-aged women and men and some elderly patients over 65 years. Most patients have employment (and are privately billed) although some patients have Health card concession cards, disability pensions or Senior Commonwealth Pensioner cards (and are bulk-billed). We see a wide range of issues that cover antenatal care and womens' health, mens' health issues, chronic disease management (diabetes, heart disease, osteoarthritis, preventative health checks and screening, child health, dermatology, sports medicine and psychiatry.
