Great Southern

The Great Southern region, often referred to as the ‘Great Outdoors’ begins just 220 kilometres south east of Perth. The Great Southern region boasts pristine waterways, fertile land, fresh produce and prize-winning wines with rugged coastline that provides unbeatable scenery and oceanside adventure, popular family beaches and quiet sheltered bays.

The Great Southern comprises many natural beauties such as the Natural Bridge and Gap in Albany and the Karri forests in Denmark. Just a short drive from a number of centres you will find the Stirling ranges which boasts the highest peak in Western Australia – Bluff Knoll, this makes for great hiking.

The City of Albany is just 4.5 hours from Perth by road and a one hour flight by air and has a population of approximately 25,000 people. Albany itself enjoys a temperate climate with an average summer temperature of 22.5c and an average winter temperature of 17.9c. Popular activities include whale watching, visiting the Albany Wind Farm and also Whaleworld tours and activities.

Just a 45 minute drive north of Albany is Mount Barker. This small town, once known for its apples is now predominantly renowned for its wildflowers and wine being that it’s situated in the centre of the Great Southern wine region. Denmark, also famous for its wine can be found east of Albany, a short 45 minute drive. This busy town thrives on the comings and goings of tourists seeking gourmet foods, local artwork and breathtaking scenery.

Further north you will find Narrogin, known as the major service centre for the great Southern Region. Popular events include the Narrogin Eisteddfod in June, Narrogin Show and Spring Festival in October. The rev heads weekend in November is a very popular celebration of speed and motors.

Boddington is just an hour’s scenic drive from Perth and hosts one of the world’s largest producing goldmines, which can be viewed from the Boddington Goldmine Viewing Platform. Each November Boddington holds an exciting weekend rodeo where the region comes together for this popular event.

The Bibbulmun Track winds its way through parts of the Great Southern Region providing hikers and trekkers alike with picturesque walks along rugged coastline and magnificent Karri Forrest.

There are many interesting towns in the Great Southern which offer a variety of unique experiences.
