Goldfields - Esperance
Kalgoorlie and Esperance offer some great opportunities for procedural practice in a well supported environment. Kalgoorlie is the regional centre and has 3-5 training practices. There are good obstetric opportunities, with 800 births/year and two resident obstetricians for back up, abundant paediatrics (the town is full of children), and the opportunity to admit to the local hospital.
There are particularly good opportunities for work in Aboriginal health in Kalgoorlie - Bega Garnbirringu is a state of the art AMS, well equipped with 5-6 doctors, who work in a team with aboriginal health workers. The hospital on call is shared week about, and offers the chance to keep skilled with management of acute medical presentations as well as day to day care of the dialysis unit patients.
The local division is very active in providing educational support for all GPs and the move to regionalisation of GP training is partially underway. There is the opportunity to do the PMH Diploma of Child Health using the hospital’s telehealth facilities.
