2009 GP Registrar Placement Process
Every year WAGPET undertakes a complex matching process to allocate GP Registrars to their General Practice, Extended Skills and Advanced Rural Skills Training posts. GP Registrars complete a placement preference form identifying their top three preferred placements for the coming training year. GP Supervisors, if they have been contacted by Registrars regarding training placements, can submit a preference form identifying which Registrars they would prefer to have placed in their practice.
Placement Procedure
April
Training Practices and GP Supervisors indicate their placement capacity for the following year and at what level of training they can take GP Registrars.
May
GP Registrars and Training Practices are emailed information about the placement process. Information on training opportunities and Training Practices and Posts will be available on the WAGPET website. GP Registrars are required to contact the Training Practices they are interested in to speak with the GP Supervisor or practice manager. Throughout the placement process WAGPET will correspond with GP Registrars and Training Practices via email and online through WAGPET elearning.
June
GP Registrars and Training Practices submit their placement preferences online on WAGPET elearning. GP Registrars nominate their top three preferred placements and Training Practices nominate their GP Registrars preferences based on discussions they have had with them.
July
WAGPET allocates placements based on preferences received and GP Registrar training requirements, matching this to offers made by Training Practices.
A meeting is held with GP Registrars and GP Supervisor representatives to match all GP Registrar and Training Practice preferences, with the aim that as many first and second preferences as possible are matched in the coming year.
Where a direct match is not possible, the Training Practice and GP Registrars involved are contacted by the Operations Manager or the relevant Program Training Advisor to discuss alternate placement options. GP Registrars may also discuss this with their Program Training Advisor.
August
WAGPET emails details of tentative placements for the coming year to GP Registrars and Training Practices. During this stage of the placement process GP Registrars and Supervisors can refuse the placement, however, WAGPET cannot guarantee that an alternate placement will be available.
Confirming the Placement
GP Registrars contact the allocated Training Practice and arrange to meet with the GP Supervisor, either in person or by telephone, to discuss employment arrangements. GP Registrars should provide a copy of their CV to the Practice either at or before this meeting. To confirm the placement the following must be completed:
Employment Agreement
- The employment agreement between the Training Practice and the GP Registrar describes working hours, remuneration and other agreed conditions. Registrars should provide the Practice a copy of their medical insurance cover and medical board registration. A copy of the Employment Agreement, signed by the GP Registrar and Supervisor, is sent to WAGPET to confirm the placement.
- An employment agreement template is available for download in the related links section.
Medicare Australia Application for a Medicare Provider Number
- One form covers all sites being worked at during one training term. GP Registrars should send the forms directly to Medicare Australia. Do NOT send them to WAGPET! This form can be downloaded from the GPET website (see related links).
Application for Recognition as a General Practitioner
- and ensure the GP Supervisor signs it. This is then sent to WAGPET (fax is acceptable). This form can be downloaded from the GPET website (see related links).
Prescription pads
Standard and authority prescription pads are organised with the Practice Manager. You will need your prescriber number and provider number to do this. You may also need doctor's bag medications and the practice will help with this.
Other equipment
GP Registrars should confirm with the Practice if there is any specific equipment they need to provide on the job and when the practice orientation will be conducted.
Finally: check everything again to make sure you have not left anything out.
