Apply to become a Training Practice
GP Registrars can only undertake training under the AGPT program in Practices which have been accredited by either or both the RACGP and ACRRM. Accreditation is generally given for three years and Training Practices are supported by WAGPET to provide the information required by the Colleges to support accreditation.
Practices interested in becoming an accredited Training Practice for the AGPT must apply to WAGPET. WAGPET will initially request information about the Practice to assess whether it is a suitable Practice for training GP Registrars. Potential GP Supervisors must be enthusiastic about their involvement in teaching and mentoring GP Registrars and the placement of a GP Registrar at the Practice should not be motivated solely by the need to fill a workforce shortage.
If you are interested in becoming a GP Supervisor and for your Practice to become an accredited Training Practice for WAGPET trainees we would like to hear from you.
Things to consider include:
- Patient base – does the Practice have sufficient patients (both number and diversity) to support training?
- GP role models – are there GPs in the Practice who have the time to support the GP Registrar in teaching and supervision and act as a mentor and role model?
- Are the GP Supervisors prepared to attend the required amount of GP Supervisor education per year with WAGPET?
- Room – does the Practice have a consulting room for the GP Registrar?
- Will other Practice staff support the teaching role of the GP Supervisor?
- Practice flexibility – can the Practice cope with regular changes in GP Registrars and the possibility of not having a GP Registrar placed in the Practice?
So that you are aware of the responsibilities and standards required of GP Supervisors and Training Practices please review the College Standards which apply to you and your Practice.
- Rural practices can apply for accreditation with either or both the RACGP and ACRRM.
- Metropolitan Practices will be accredited in line with the RACGP Standards for Trainers and Training Posts.
Practices applying for accreditation are asked in the first instance to complete a WAGPET Expression of Interest form that captures information such as:
- number of GPs in the practice
- past teaching experience of GPs in the practice
- patient demographics and potential learning opportunities
- areas of special interest and teaching available from GPs in the practice.
The information you provide is reviewed by medical educators to determine the practice suitability to host GP Registrars. To register your interest and request an Expression of Interest form contact WAGPET.
