Pilbara Registrar Weekend Scholarship 2008
The mining boom in the northwest has resulted in significant population growth in the Pilbara and a growing demand for health services in the region. Doctors at Nickol Bay Hospital in Karratha, together with the Pilbara Division of General Practice, the Shire of Roebourne and local industry teamed up to run a weekend scholarship to attract GP Registrars and Prevocational doctors to come to the Pilbara and consider training and work opportunities in the region. Supported by WAGPET Innovations Funding, the weekend involved a tour of health facilities in Karratha, occupational health considerations for local industry and spending the night at Malus Island in the Dampier Archipelago. The weekend also gave visitors the chance to talk with local doctors about working and living in the region and the skill-set required. Our thanks to everyone involved in making the weekend such a great success.
